Lowden State Park
Home to the iconic 48-foot Black Hawk statue overlooking the Rock River, this historic park offers hiking, camping, boating, and stunning river views in Oregon, Illinois.
Lowden State Park, located just north of Oregon in Ogle County, is a treasured Illinois landmark crowned by one of the most recognizable sculptures in the Midwest. This riverside park combines natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and historic significance, making it a must-visit destination for lodge guests.
The Iconic Black Hawk Statue
The park’s centerpiece is the magnificent Black Hawk statue, also known as “The Eternal Indian.” Created by renowned sculptor Lorado Taft in 1911, this impressive 48-foot concrete figure stands watch over the Rock River valley, weighing an astounding 536,770 pounds. It is believed to be the second-largest monolithic concrete statue in the world, after Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. While commonly associated with Chief Black Hawk, the statue serves as a tribute to all Native Americans.
Hiking & Natural Beauty
Four miles of well-maintained foot trails wind through the park, leading visitors through diverse natural landscapes and offering spectacular views of the Rock River. These trails provide opportunities to observe local wildlife, enjoy seasonal wildflowers, and experience the peaceful beauty of the river valley. The trails range from easy walks to slightly more challenging terrain, suitable for hikers of all skill levels.
Camping Facilities
For those wishing to extend their outdoor experience, Lowden State Park offers excellent camping facilities. The park features 80 Class A campsites equipped with electricity, a shower building, and a sanitary dumping station for trailers. Additionally, there’s a unique campground cabin with two sets of bunk beds, a full-sized bed, and electricity—perfect for families or groups. Budget-conscious campers can opt for the 38 Class B/S campsites, which don’t offer electricity but do provide access to showers.
Water Recreation
The Rock River provides ample opportunities for aquatic recreation. Anglers can cast their lines for various fish species, while boaters and water skiers can enjoy the scenic waterway. The park’s boat ramp, located about one mile downstream from the Black Hawk statue, provides easy access to the river.
Year-Round Picnicking
The park’s picnic areas remain open throughout the year, equipped with tables, drinking water, park stoves, outdoor toilets, and litter cans. These facilities make Lowden State Park an ideal spot for family gatherings, group outings, or a peaceful lunch with a view.
A Living Memorial
Lowden State Park serves as a memorial to Governor Frank O. Lowden, who served Illinois during World War I. His vision and dedication to preserving Illinois’ natural beauty live on in this beautiful riverside sanctuary.
