Nachusa Grasslands
Experience 4,000 acres of restored tallgrass prairie with free-roaming bison, 700+ native plant species, and exceptional birdwatching opportunities at this Nature Conservancy preserve.
Nachusa Grasslands is a remarkable 4,000-acre Nature Conservancy preserve showcasing the beauty and biodiversity of Illinois’ native tallgrass prairie ecosystem. This living laboratory offers visitors a rare glimpse into what much of the Midwest looked like before European settlement, complete with a thriving bison herd and hundreds of native species.
The Bison Experience
The preserve’s most iconic residents are the bison that roam freely across 1,500 acres of rolling grassland. These magnificent animals play a crucial role in the prairie’s restoration, their grazing patterns helping to maintain the ecosystem’s natural balance. While the bison can be viewed from public roadsides, visitors should note that hiking is not permitted within the fenced bison unit for safety reasons.
Exceptional Biodiversity
Nachusa Grasslands is home to an impressive 700 native plant species and provides critical habitat for 180 species of birds. Nature enthusiasts will delight in spotting grassland birds, observing the behaviors of badgers, and perhaps catching a glimpse of the threatened Blanding’s turtle. The preserve’s diverse habitats—including prairie, savanna, and woodlands—support this rich array of wildlife.
Visitor Center & Trails
Start your visit at the Visitor Center, where commanding views of the preserve and informative exhibits tell the story of prairie restoration. A gentle slope leads to a pavilion and a short prairie trail walking loop, perfect for those wanting a quick introduction to the landscape. More adventurous visitors can drive to one of five trailheads scattered throughout the preserve to explore the grasslands on foot.
Important Visitor Information
The Nature Conservancy recommends wearing long pants and sturdy shoes for your visit, as well as bringing sun protection. Cold, potable water and self-composting restrooms are available at the Visitor Center. Please note that pets are not allowed on the preserve to protect the sensitive ecosystem and wildlife.
